Career Readiness & 21st Century Skills
Containers of Facts vs. Possessors of Skills

One of the common concerns that I hear at board meetings and in the national debate is that "the world is becoming more competitive" and that we need students to learn the fundamental skills better and earlier. Clearly, this narratives assumes the justified ends of students becoming scientists, engineers and other professionals along this same area of focus.

Yet, employers seem to be looking less for specific knowledge and more often for those so-called (and often understated) "people skills" as the tipping point between job candidates. Let's be honest. Music has inherently offered an education in these employable skills long before the 21st century and our students don't get the whole lot of them in any other subject.
